An independent Scotland's banknotes from the Scottish Reserve Bank

Independence is normal

Nearly every country in the world is independent and is able to control its economic policies in its own interests and those of its people.

Scotland, however, as part of the UK, cannot. Its economy is governed by England, a neighbouring country to the south and the largest of the four countries that make up the UK. England has 533 MPs (members of the Westminster Parliament) compared to just 59 Scottish MPs, so Scotland can never have proper influence over policies that directly affect the Scottish economy as Scotland's budget is also controlled by England.

Once independent, however, Scotland will have complete control over an economic policy that best suits the Scottish economy. It will be able to ensure that the banking system serves the interests of the people of Scotland, not just bankers and it will also be able to better regulate the financial sector more effectively than Westminster does.

Furthermore, a Scottish Reserve Bank will be able to prioritise policies such as full employment. A Scottish Reserve Bank will also issue its own banknotes and coins. Prior to the establishment of a Scottish Reserve Bank and a Scottish currency, the new banknotes will be designed possibly through a national competition before being printed.
